Personnel committee focused on public safety

The Apex Town Council’s Personnel Committee has finished reviewing town staff’s requests for new positions for the 2008-2009 fiscal year.

Each year the committee, chaired by Councilman Bryan Gossage, meets with the heads from every department and reviews salary levels, hiring policies, and proposed positions. The committee reviews the requests – often for dozens of new employees – for approval before they’re sent to the full council for a vote.

“We’ll look at the new positions they’re asking for and sometimes we have our own recommendations that they might scale back a little here or add someone over there,” says Gossage.

“We focused a bit more on Public Works in the past two years, but most often our focus has been on public safety.”

This year Gossage’s committee approved six new firefighting positions and five new positions for the Apex Police Department, three of which are sworn officers.

“We’ve approved 40 new public safety positions in just the past five years,” notes Gossage, “Eighteen for Apex police and 22 for our fire department.”

The Town currently has 269 full time employees, or about 7.9 workers for every 1000 residents.
