To pave or not to pave

Town mulls over delaying project on Zeno Road

The saga of Zeno Road continues.

Just when it appeared the town was getting ready to pave the dirt road that runs from Apex Peakway to Beaver Creek Commons, those plans might be put on hold.

At last week's town board meeting, town manager Bruce Radford suggested that postponing the $210,000 paving project might be economically prudent.

According to Radford, Aspen Development Company has been negotiating with property owners about purchasing land along Zeno Road.

The company hopes to acquire the land and build a large commercial development in the area.  This development would result in Zeno Road being torn up and redirected.

It is estimated that the road would be torn up in about two years.

The town, which would be reimbursed $56,000 by the NC Department of Transportation for the paving project, had planned to pave the road before businesses began opening in Beaver Creek Commons later this year.

"We would be spending money on a road that would be torn up in two years," said Radford.  "I have to question whether it is worth it."

Responding to a question from Commissioner Bryan Gossage, Radford said the the town "gave our word" to the residents of Zeno Road that it would be paved prior to the completion of Beaver Creek Commons.

Commissioner Gene Schulze said he wanted to hear what Zeno Road residents had to say about the matter.

"They've been getting a raw deal,"  said Schulze.  "We need to do right by them.  I want to hear from the residents."

Residents on Zeno Road, along with a representative from NC DOT, are being invited to attend the July 20 town board meeting to discuss the situation.
